Work Safe

Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace

Supervisors and managers are not responsible for diagnosing substance abuse problems, but they are responsible for observing and documenting unsatisfactory work performance or behavior. Your supervisors work closely with your employees, making it easier for them to identify and address—maybe even prevent—dangerous and costly on-the-job drug use.

Make education and training a priority
Offer managers substance abuse training so they can be coached on the signs, symptoms, behavior changes and performance problems associated with alcohol or drug use. Invite a substance abuse expert—such as a counselor or law enforcement official—into your workplace to meet with managers.

Encourage managers to keep their knowledge about the impact of drug use in the workplace fresh. Offer them opportunities to read or attend training outside the office on this topic. Consider bringing in an expert at least once a year to provide refresher training.
